Old town. Those words has a powerful force. Most of us gets drawn towards the old town if a city got one worth visiting. A lot of travellers also has some interest in history.
There are not many cities like Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the world. The German city, which has about 11.000 inhabitants, have an almost intact medieval architecture. And believe it or not, most of the city is surrounded by a city wall, which they started to built at the same time as the Rothenburg ob der Tauber became a city in 1172.
It is no surprise that this city is on UNESCOs world heritage list.
I parked my car just outside the wall and I got a feeling right away that something magnificent was waiting for me on the inside when this was the gate I had to enter to get inside.
As soon as I started my walk on top of the wall my mind went several hundred years back in time and it had to be really hard to overtake this city.
And best of all, you can actually walk on top of the wall for more than half of the borders of the old city.
The city has been rebuilt several times. It has been destroyed by earth quake, hit by major fire and been under siege.
During the end of the second world war about 40 percent was bombed in ruins under a attack on March 31st 1945, but luckily an american general, who earlier had visited the city, stopped the attack so the city didn’t get wiped of the map. Since then a lot of work has been done to get Rothenburg ob der Tauber back to its former glory.
Today the town is a really popular tourist destination. For the first time on my trip in Europe I met a lot of tourists. Already after 200 meters, this is what I saw after I came around a corner.
What in the world was so interesting that everyone was completely immersed? All the fuss was actually about two dolls in a window that appeared every hour and one of them was drinking beer. Well, I think it was more fascinating to watch the tourists.
But there is one place that is really special. One street heads downwards to a tower while to the left the street goes straight towards another tower. Its probably one of the most photographed places in all of Germany. A german guy was frustrating over the facts that he never could get a photo here without people in it.
If you ask me, its boring without people. I didn’t say anything to him. You can judge for your self.
The weather changed fast. Cloudy, some blue skies and it rained like crazy three times. The last time I was standing on top of the wall, under the roof, and I didn’t mind at all that the rain poured down on us.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a place you got to have on your bucket list. You got to go there once in your lifetime. I’m sure you will fall in love right away.
